£100,000-a-week midfielder could leave Arsenal in January
Granit Xhaka looks increasingly likely to leave the London club in the winter window after being dropped as captain following his bust-up with fans at Arsenal.
Switzerland international was jeered when he was substituted with Crystal Palace last month and responded by cupping his ear to the crowd, telling fans to ‘f**k off’ and storming down the tunnel.
Granit has not played for the Gunners since, missing games with Liverpool, Wolverhampton and Vitoria, and was officially stripped of the captaincy on Tuesday.
Granit was ‘hurt’ by the decision and feels he may now need to leave the London club, particularly if his exile from the matchday squad continues.
The 27-year-old midfielder recognises that he needs to be playing regularly to keep his place in Switzerland starting line-up, amid being skipper, and does not want to jeopardise his hopes of playing at Euro 2020.
Gunners coach Unai Emery has tried to keep his ex-skipper out of the firing line, though did not give any assurances over his future at the London club.
Having played for the German giants before moving to Gunners in 2016, Swiss midfielder’s likeliest next move would be a return to Bundesliga in the winter window. Probed on whether Granit has asked to leave the London club, Unai said: ‘We are speaking a lot about that, and it’s clear there are no more words about that.
Dani Ceballos’ injury with Vitoria could see Granit brought back into the squad with the Foxes at the weekend, while Auba will wear the armband having taken over as captain.
