£125,000-a-week centre-back could leave Arsenal in summer
David Luiz could leave the London giants this summer with his deal ready to expire at the end of the campaign, according to reports. Brazil international was believed to have signed a two-year contract when he made the switch from Chelsea in August 2019, but there was just ever an initial 12-month deal in place.
David has been one of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted centre-backs since the Spanish manager’s arrival at the Emirates in December. The former Man City assistant and technical director Edu are both said to be keen on keeping Luiz for longer, but no new deal extension has been agreed as of yet.
The 33-year-old defender recently spoke of his desire, meanwhile, to end his career back at Benfica, the club which launched his European career but has been fulsome in his praise of Mikel Arteta recently. Arsenal are reportedly willing to let go of defenders Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis in the next transfer window.
Mikel Arteta is planning a summer clear-out as he prepares for the arrival of £27m addition William Saliba from Saint-Etienne. The 19-year-old centre-back was bought last year and immediately sent back to the French club on a season-long loan.
The Brazilian centre-back performed erratically during the first half of the season under Unai Emery, but he has been one of Gunner’s outstanding displays since the appointment of Mikel Arteta in December.
Gunners chief Raul Sanllehi has warned staff not to expect any mega-money moves in the next transfer window due to the financial implications of the coronavirus crisis.
