18-year-old Man United starlet will miss international break due to an injury
Red Devils centre-forward Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad with a back injury. The 18-year-old striker came on as a 66th-minute replacement for Juan Mata in Man United’s 1-0 defeat with Newcastle on the weekend and played through to the final whistle at St James’ Park.
However, Mason has been ruled out of England U21s’ upcoming games with Slovenia and Austria after feeling pain in his back. Aidy Boothroyd handed Greenwood his debut for the U21s last month as the English centre-forward made a substitute appearance in a 3-2 win against Turkey.
U21 England international has experienced a significant rise since he made his professional debut in Red Devils dramatic Champions League victory against PSG back in March. Mason will stay with Man United during the international break, and Norwegian coach will no doubt be sweating over his fitness ahead of the side’s clash against Liverpool.
Following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has put his faith in Greenwood with regular minutes in Red Devils cup tournaments this term. The 18-year-old striker stepped up to the plate with goals with Astana and Rochdale at the end of last month.
Andy Cole fears his former club could fall into the trap of heaping unnecessary pressure on Mason following the departures of Lukaku and Sanchez in the summer. ‘His finishing is a joke. Left or right foot, he’s got quality in abundance, I hope they don’t, which Man United won’t do anyway, they won’t put too much undue pressure on him.
