19-year-old attacker has revealed why he left Liverpool this summer
Rafael Camacho rejected a contract at PL leaders Liverpool to come back to Portugal with Sporting Lisbon instead.
Considering that Harvey Elliott, Sepp Van den Berg, Neco Williams, Rhian Brewster and Caoimhin Kelleher have all made their Reds debuts this campaign, you have to wonder why any budding starlet would feel that he’d be better off away from the Merseyside club right now.
But while Bobby Duncan didn’t feel that he was up to the challenge, swapping Reds for Fiorentina after a very messy divorce, U20 Portugal international too turned his back on German boss in a strange summer for the European kings.
The sprightly attacker rejected the opportunity to sign a contract extension with the Merseyside club, amid being promoted to Jurgen Klopp’s first-team earlier in the year, before returning to the Lions for an initial £5m.
Rafael felt he’d feature far more regularly in green and white than he would in red. The irony of the fact that Rafael has played just 70 minutes of league football this campaign will not be lost on anyone, then.
Camacho has, however, caught the eye with cameo appearances in Sporting’s last two Liga NOS games and Rafael looks well placed to feature far more regularly after the November international break. “I want to win trophies here at Sporting and show myself to the world as a player,” Rafael said.
The Portuguese attacker has no regrets about walking away from the Champions of Europe, even if he has played only three substitute games in the last four months.
