21-year-old centre-back set to pen long-term contract with Chelsea
Premier League club Chelsea have concluded plans to offer Fikayo Tomori a new contract this summer. London club want to offer the young defender a new long-term contract shortly after he came close to joining Premier League outfit Everton. Several clubs are still interested in signing English defender during the winter transfer window.
Fikayo was close to signing for the Toffees on loan before the transfer window ended on Thursday. Everton transfer was called off after Chelsea agreed on a deal with Arsenal for another centre-back. Arsenal and Blues agreed a deal reported to be nearly £8m for Brazilian defender David Luiz.
The David Luiz transfer to the Emirates ensured that the Toffees loan move for Tomori was called off. The 21-year-old centre-back has two years left on his current contract at Stamford Bridge having signed the existing deal in 2016. His contract will expire at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
U21 England international spent the whole of last campaign on loan at English Championship club Derby County under the guidance of current Blues coach Frank Lampard. Fikayo and Frank were instrumental to the successes recorded by the Rams who reached the Championship playoff final before losing to Aston Villa.
London club had an impressive consequence in the Premier League as they finished the tournament in a third place. Chelsea also won the Europa League final against Arsenal 4-1, and it was the last title for Eden Hazard. Blues signed Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in winter and Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid with a permanent deal.
