£290,000-a-week Chelsea injured midfielder may skip Super Cup final
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is sweating on the fitness of N’Golo Kante ahead of the UEFA Super Cup final with Liverpool on Wednesday.
France international was not fit enough to start Blues Premier League opener against Man United at Old Trafford on Sunday and had to be content with a late cameo from the bench as London club fell to a 4-0 defeat.
Chelsea are now gearing up to play against European Cup winners Liverpool in a midweek Super Cup match, as a reward for winning the Europa League back in May.
N’Golo missed Blues pre-season through injury and was unlikely to feature in the starting line-up with the Reds, but English coach has now revealed that he picked up a fresh knock in the loss to Red Devils.
Kante is now a major doubt for London club’s latest fixture in Istanbul and will face a late assessment before a final decision is made on his inclusion in the matchday squad.
Frank told a press conference on Tuesday: “The selection of Kante on the bench was pure because he had an injury and missed pre-season, so he wasn’t ready. “I’m very aware of how important he is for us. He picked up an injury in the match, so we are assessing that for tomorrow.”
The 28-year-old midfielder has been a standout performer for Chelsea during his time at the Stamford Bridge, helping the London club win three major titles in three seasons, including the Premier League trophy.
Blues struggled to stop Man United’s attacking footballers from breaking quickly at the weekend, with French star’s absence felt from the very first whistle.
