30-year-old striker set to pen new contract with Man United
The Red Devils are ready to keep Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of January 2021. Nigeria international is due to come back to the Chinese Super League club in June as his initial loan agreement with Man United just runs until May 31.
Odion has been training with his Red Devils teammates at Carrington his week, and the club have been hopeful that a new agreement could be reached with Shanghai Shenhua for the striker to stay at Theatre of Dreams until the end of the delayed campaign.
But Ighalo’s agent Atta Aneke has confirmed that Man United are now on the verge of agreeing on a new contract with Shanghai Shenhua that will keep the centre-forward with the Red Devils until next year. The Chinese club had initially demanded £20m from Man United for the 30-year-old striker to be signed permanently.
But the Red Devils were unwilling to meet that asking price for the Nigerian centre-forward who turns 31 in June. Instead, Man United are now ready to keep Odion on a temporary deal, which means he will miss the majority of the new Chinese Super League campaign which is due to start in June.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed with Ighalo’s impact and attitude since his arrival in the winter transfer window, with the striker scoring four goals in eight games. The Norwegian said he was hoping that he would stay at Man United. ‘The loan deal went until the end of May now, so obviously he’s supposed to be going back,’ he said.
