Arsenal are closely monitoring 21-year-old French centre-back

Gunners coach Mikel Arteta is reportedly set to push for two defensive signings in the form of Jerome Boateng and Dayot Upamecano. The London club have not looked convincing at the back at any point this campaign and need to improve on the unreliable central defensive pairing of David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Mikel could try to do this by signing Bayern Munich centre-back Boateng on loan this winter, before pushing for a £50m deal for RB Leipzig defender Upamecano in the summer. Arsenal supporters would likely be content with this, even if Jerome doesn’t look like much of an upgrade on Luiz or Sokratis.

Boateng would at least be decent short-term cover before a summer move for Dayot, who could be an ideal partner for another exciting teenager William Saliba. Saliba was signed by Gunners last summer before being loaned back to Saint-Etienne for this campaign, though he’ll finally be cleared to link up with Arsenal for next campaign.

Saliba and Upamecano look a hugely promising partnership if the London club can get the latter in, while for now Germany international can hopefully at least steady the ship for the club in a low-cost, low-risk deal. Arsenal have terrible consequences in the Premier League this campaign as they are in a 10th place in the table.

London club signed several players during the summer transfer window like Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, Nicolas Pepe from Lille, Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid, Kieran Tierney from Celtic, David Luiz from Chelsea and William Saliba from Saint-Etienne.
