Arsenal boss confident 18-year-old attacker will sign new contract
The London giants coach Mikel Arteta says he’s ‘very positive’ that Bukayo Saka will sign a new contract at Arsenal. U19 England international is out of contract in a year’s time and talks over a new contract have been ongoing throughout 2020 without resolution.
Bukayo has broken into the first team this term and Gunners are willing to raise his wages to recognise his status as an established part of Spanish manager’s first team. Saka’s entourage are pushing for a bigger deal and cited the £100,000-a-week deal that Blues handed to Hudson-Odoi as proof of what the winger could earn elsewhere.
However, after giving a positive update on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future a fortnight ago, Arsenal manager now says progress is being made with the 18-year-old winger’s representatives. ‘I am very positive that everything is going to be done with Saka very shortly,’ said Mikel Arteta.
‘The communications between the club, agents & the family has been going on for months & is very fluent.’ The English winger has been the Gunners footballer used the second-most since the beginning of Project Restart, with just Shkodran Mustafi starting all four matches and not coming off.
Like Bukayo, Aubameyang is out of the deal in 2021 and talks are underway with his representatives. Gunners had put a £50m price tag on the Gabonese striker before the pandemic hit but they’d be looking at a figure closer to £30m if they choose to sell him this summer.
That undersells Bukayo’s importance. Yet while Shkodran has been consistently at centre-back, Saka has played different positions: as the right-sided forward against Man City, the #8 in a three-man midfield against Brighton, a wing-back in a 343 against Southampton.
