Arsenal enter the battle to sign 25-year-old English centre-back

Man City centre-back John Stones’ future at the Etihad has been plunged into doubt with coach Pep Guardiola lining up a transfer for Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci. According to the latest transfer rumours regarding England international, it looks Gunners and Spurs are now ready to battle it out for his signing at the cost of nearly £50m.

John joined the Cityzens from Everton for a fee of £48m in 2016 but hasn’t hit the heights expected of him since his transfer. The Spanish manager is reportedly looking to bolster his defence this summer, and Guardiola has become increasingly frustrated with Stones’ lack of fitness and displays in matches.

Pep has preferred Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi in the heart of Man City’s back-line this campaign after losing Aymeric Laporte to a long term injury for the majority of the season. The 25-year-old centre-back has started just 10 Premier League matches for Cityzens this campaign, and he has been left out of the Three Lions squad as well.

The English defender’s deal at Man City runs out in 2022, and there have been no talks between the club and John for an extension to his deal. However, despite Pep Guardiola looking to sign the Juventus star Bonucci to replace Stones, it is believed that Bianconeri will be reluctant to sell the veteran Italian defender, according to the report.

Gunners supporters will hope there can be some movement on this, however, as Stones could be an excellent signing for them in a problem position. Arsenal heavily linked with RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti and Lille youngster Gabriel Magalhaes.
