Arsenal given green light to sign €20m-rated Croatian defender
The London giants are reportedly set to make a transfer approach for Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren after being put on alert by the fact that he wants a move to Arsenal. Spurs, West Ham United and Crystal Palace as being among Croatia international’s admirers as he looks set to seal a move away from the Merseyside club.
The report states all the teams named are prepared to make their move for Dejan, which seems slightly surprising given his highly unconvincing Reds career. Arsenal signed Pablo Mari from Flamengo and Cedric Soares from Southampton during the winter transfer window.
While Lovren has had some good moments and picked up a Champions League winners’ medal last campaign, he’s recently become fourth choice defender for the German manager and has often looked error-prone, leading to costly mistakes at essential times.
In many ways, that makes him sound like Dejan had fit in perfectly alongside David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi at Emirates, but the London club surely need to be aiming higher at the moment. Mikel will no doubt see central defence as an area of his squad that he could improve on, but it would be a big shock if Dejan proved good enough to do that.
Still, Gunners, in comparison to most of their rivals, doesn’t have much of a history of splashing the cash on big-name additions, so might view Dejan as a safe, experienced and cheap option in back-line. Arsenal have poor consequences in the PL this season as they are in a 9th place in the table.
