Arsenal in advanced talks with 21-year-old Bundesliga defender
Dayot Upamecano has reportedly told RB Leipzig he wants to leave Germany in the summer, with the London club among the clubs keen to sign him. U21 France international has made it clear he will be moving on, despite the progress made under Julien Nagelsmann.
Dayot’s current contract expires in 2021, meaning Red Bulls will likely have to cash in on him, despite his importance to the club. And he has piled pressure on the club by insisting he wants to leave, forcing them to find a buyer. Leipzig stands to make a decent profit on Upamecano, who they signed for only £9m from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.
Gunners bid €60m for his services last summer and that sum would trigger his release clause. However, Leipzig may be willing to accept a lower price to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer.
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are among the clubs to be linked with the 21-year-old centre-back, who has helped Leipzig concede the joint-fewest goals in Germany’s top flight after 25 matches this campaign.
Arsenal had been priced out of a move earlier this season, with the French defender’s release clause then £72m. But that number drops by £17m each campaign and will now be as low as £55m in the summer.
Arsenal manager knows he must work hard in the upcoming window to strengthen his defensive ranks. Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz have been error-prone this term, while Sokratis Papastathopoulos has failed to nail down a spot in the starting line-up.
