Arsenal in pole position to sign 22-year-old La Liga defender

Gunners are reportedly set to rival the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea for the transfer of Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as they eye a long-term replacement for Sokratis. Spain international has looked hugely impressive at the Estadio de la Cerámica, and it would not be at all surprising to see him carve out a fine career for himself.

Los Blancos and Blues are among the suitors for Pau, who is thought to have a release clause possibly as low as £44m, which could end up being an absolute bargain. However, in a blow for Real Madrid and Chelsea, Arsenal are also now chasing Torres.

Sokratis David Luiz and Mustafi are in a terrible form, and they need replacement. The 22-year-old defender could be ideal to come in to replace them in the Gunners defence. Arsenal will hope they can still lure the Spanish centre-back to the Emirates Stadium, however, as the defence has been a problem position for Gunners for some time now.

Chelsea perhaps don’t need him quite as bad after the rise of teenager Fikayo Tomori this campaign, though more depth is always useful. Pau named in the national team squad for this international break which is already a big achievement for the footballer.

He has vast potential and can become a top-class centre-back if he continuous improvement. Unai Emery signed William Saliba from Saint-Étienne this summer as Spanish tactician wants to bolster the back-line and fight for the titles. Torres probably will accept the correct offer from the Gunners as he will get regular playing at the Emirates.
