Arsenal interested in signing 25-year-old Premier League centre-back
Man City centre-back John Stones is reportedly ready to hold discussions with Mikel Arteta to join the Gunners this winter. England international has failed to win Pep Guardiola’s trust after a series of high-profile mistakes across his three-and-a-half-year stay at the Etihad and Fernandinho has overtaken him in the pecking order at the back-line.
London club are on the hunt for centre-backs after Calum Chambers was ruled out for the campaign with a severe knee injury and Mikel is keen to pursue either a temporary or a permanent move for John. Stones would be interested in talking to Arsenal as he looks to secure regular playing time and nail down his place in England’s starting line-up ahead of Euro 2020.
The 25-year-old defender has badly struggled for form and fitness, and the centre-back has started only nine matches in the Premier League this term. Spaniard shares a good relationship with the English defender from his time in Man City dugout as Guardiola’s assistant and feels the centre-back would be a good fit at the Emirates.
Arteta allowed young centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos to join Nurnberg on loan earlier this week which has freed up space in Gunners squad for a new signing. John and Mikel share the same agency which Gunners could use to their advantage should they press ahead with a bid to land Man City centre-back.
Arsenal manager has confirmed that he’s looking to bolster his defensive options this winter and Jerome Boateng, Dayot Upamecano and Nathan Ake have all been linked as well as John Stones.
