Arsenal leading the race to sign 6 ft 4 in Bundesliga centre-back
London club’s hierarchy reportedly has some concerns about potentially clinching the transfer of Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng. The 31-year-old defender has not been as much of a regular at Bayern this campaign, and this has led to some recent speculation over his long-term future at the Allianz Arena.
Gunners are among the clubs believed to have shown an interest in Jerome, as they’ve approached the experienced defender. However, an update on the Boateng transfer situation from Goal suggests there are some at London club who are concerned about potentially doing a deal for the centre-back.
While there’s no doubt the London club look in need of signings in the back-line, it makes sense that Germany international might not be the most convincing option. Arsenal chiefs are concerned about the German centre-back’s lack of recent game time and his various fitness issues.
David Luiz and Sokratis have not been good enough for most of this campaign, and it looks clear Gunners need to sign a top centre-back currently playing at, or approaching, his peak years, rather than more ageing players coming towards the end of their careers.
Arsenal can surely aim a little higher than Jerome Boateng right now, who doesn’t look enough of an upgrade on the footballers they currently have in that area. Arsenal have terrible consequences in the Premier League this season as they are in a 10th place in the table.
London club added several players during the summer transfer window like Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, Nicolas Pepe from Lille, Kieran Tierney from Celtic and David Luiz from Chelsea.
