Arsenal leading the race to sign €40m-rated French defensive rock

London club are reportedly ready to make a new approach for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano during the winter transfer window. U21 France international has emerged as one of the top European prospects at the German club, already making a total of 79 appearances since moving to Bundesliga in winter 2017.

Gunners had been keen to sign the footballer during the summer, only for Bundesliga giants to insist that they were not prepared to part ways with one of their most prized assets for anything below his release clause, alleged to be €100m. Frenchman has vast potential and can become a top-class centre-back if he continuous improvement.

However, €20m is deducted with each passing window, providing any interested clubs with more of an opportunity of pushing through a deal for Dayot. While there are conflicting suggestions of the exact figure, the report suggests that Gunners are set to make a fresh bid in the region of €60m during the winter transfer window.

Upamecano has less than two years remaining on his deal, effectively leaving his club in a position where they must consider any offers in and around his release clause. The 20-year-old defender is an unchanged figure for the club, and it will be difficult for Arsenal to sign him next summer.

Gunners started this season impressively as they are in a third place in the Premier League table. London club signed several footballers during the summer transfer window like Kieran Tierney from Celtic, Nicolas Pepe from Lille, David Luiz from Chelsea, Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano and William Saliba from Saint-Étienne.
