Arsenal missed chance to sign €20m-rated Serie A midfielder
London club have come under fire for their recruitment and their slide down the table in recent years, so it’s always interesting when stories start to emerge about footballers they chose not to sign. Ismael Bennacer was at the London club as a youth footballer but moved on without breaking into the team. He became a key figure for the Rossoneri.
Algeria international is now playing a key role for AC Milan, but it sounds like the London club had the opportunity to bring him back. Gunners had the right to match any offer to sign Ismael from Empoli, but they decided against it, and he went to Rossoneri instead. The 22-year-old midfielder helped his national team to win the 2018 AFCON.
Serie A club are believed to have signed him for €16m plus bonuses, so Bennacer could’ve been a fairly cheap option. It’s also worth noting that because they didn’t make a bid, that means they forfeited the right to receive a percentage of any future sale as well. The Algerian midfielder has vast potential and can achieve a big success in the future.
He’s played in 18 of Milan’s 24 matches this campaign and seems to be an essential member of the side, while his tough tackling and smart use of the ball could be of use to the Gunners midfield. Time will tell if it was a wrong decision to miss out on his signing, but it won’t look good for the club if he goes on to become a major star.
