Arsenal planning surprise move for 15-year-old versatile defender

London club appear to be winning the battle to sign highly-rated Sunderland youngster Logan Pye ahead of top-six rivals Man United. U16 England international has impressed scouts from both clubs and will turn 16 in October meaning interested clubs will be able to sign him before he turns professional.

Logan, who can play at either left-back or centre-back, has become a regular in Sunderland’s U18 side this campaign and has also been capped by England at U16 level. Red Devils had weighed up an offer for him over the summer, but their hesitancy has allowed Gunners to jump to the front of the queue to add him.

Black Cats failure to secure a come back to the Championship last campaign means it is unlikely that they will be able to stand in Logan’s way should he wish to move on. London club have made a clear strategic shift in their transfer policy since Spanish coach was appointed with several their signings over the past 18-months aged 24 or under.

Arsenal have signed three teenagers under Emery: Matteo Guendouzi, Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba and Pye could be the next youthful addition to join. Man United, meanwhile, are also prioritising the signings of young, homegrown footballers under Norwegian coach with Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka joining this summer.

Amid their struggles in recent years, Sunderland have an impressive academy having produced the likes of Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford. The 15-year-old defender has a vast potential and can become a top-class left-back if he continuous improvement.
