Arsenal planning to offer new contract to €15m-rated centre-back
The London giants centre-back Shkodran Mustafi is in line for a new deal after turning his form around under the Spanish boss, according to reports. Germany international looked ready to be heading for the exit door last summer, with former manager Unai Emery telling him he was free to leave the Emirates Stadium.
However, Mikel Arteta’s arrival in December has coincided with a complete U-turn in Mustafi’s displays and he is now a crucial part of Arsenal defence. Shkodran’s current deal is due to expire next summer and given that the Arsenal now have seven defenders in their squad, a clear-out in the next transfer window is expected.
But, the 28-year-old’s improved form has sparked talk of him being handed a brand new deal at Arsenal. Mustafi is just one of the many footballers who have turned around their futures at the club under Mikel. Granit Xhaka looked set to depart earlier this campaign when he was stripped of the captaincy by Unai after a spat with fans in the crowd.
Mikel Arteta promised to give the entire squad a clean slate upon his arrival and the German centre-back is one of the beneficiaries. Speaking after Gunners 2-0 win away at Wolves on Sunday, the Spanish centre-back hailed the defender’s tireless attitude.
‘They can make mistakes, of course, but if they are willing and they are happy to try again, I think they will get the rewarded and Musti’s attitude, his training, attention levels, the questions he’s asking and how much he wants to help everybody has been really good since I joined.’
