Arsenal renewed negotiations with 26-year-old Ghana international

Gunners were linked with a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey over the summer. Arsenal failed to add the highly-rated midfielder to their ranks, and he remained at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. However, Ghana international was ‘desperate’ to move to the London club.

Ornstein claimed that despite Thomas’ wish to move to Emirates, Arsenal decided not to pay Atletico midfielder’s €50m release clause as they were committing the bulk of their funds to bring in a wide footballer. Of course, that ended up being Nicolas Pepe, who arrived from Lille in a club-record deal worth £72m.

Most people knew that Gunners were keen on Partey, but the news that he was desperate for an Emirates switch is new. The 26-year-old midfielder has continued his excellent form this campaign in La Liga, and with Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira both being linked with moves away, Arsenal would be silly not to reignite their interest in him.

Whether or not the Ghanaian midfielder would still be keen on a move stays to be seen, but if the London club can add Thomas and a marquee central defender, it could prove to be a solid new year window. Partey is a product of the La Liga giants youth academy and spent his current career with them.

He is one of the best midfielders in La Liga and an unchanged figure for the club. In this season, Thomas already played 19 matches, scored two goals and provided one assist in all tournaments. He is a regular member of the national team squad.
