Arsenal started negotiations with No.9 Netherlands international
Gunners and Magpies are reportedly both interested in a potential transfer deal for Wolfsburg centre-forward Wout Weghorst after his fantastic form in the Bundesliga. Magpies are expected to cut their losses with flop Joelinton after he scored only two league goals all season.
The 27-year-old striker is not the biggest name in European football but has done well in recent times to score 38 goals in all tournaments over the last two campaigns with Wolfsburg. The Gunners are now said to be considering Wout as an option to strengthen up front amid doubts over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future.
With Gabon international now in the final year of his deal at the London club, it makes sense that Mikel Arteta could be on the lookout for a new striker, and Weghorst looks a decent option available for a reasonable price of nearly £32m, according to the report.
That makes sense as the kind of market Gunners will be operating in the near future, with Arsenal surely unable to compete with the likes of Man United and Chelsea for the real big-name buys. The Netherlands international looks a fine footballer, though, so could be a bargain if Arsenal are able to beat Magpies to his signature this summer.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his strikeforce particularly with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang expected to leave. The fee won’t be a problem for Magpies who are expected to splash much cash once their £300m takeover bid goes through.
