Bundesliga club are close to signing £100,000-a-week Arsenal midfielder

Granit Xhaka’s agent has confirmed the Gunners midfielder has reached an agreement to join Hertha Berlin. Switzerland international was stripped of the captaincy in November after he clashed with the London club fans at the Emirates Stadium during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on October 27.

After a brief period on the sidelines, Granit returned to the team and was even given a start in Mikel Arteta’s first match in charge as Gunners drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on Boxing Day. Before the match, Arteta also insisted that Xhaka is a key part of his plans going forward.

But the 27-year-old midfielder is keen to return to the Bundesliga and has agreed on a deal in principle with Hertha, although the German club have not yet reached an agreement with the London giants. Xhaka played 16 matches and provided one assist across all tournaments in this season.

‘Look, I will say it frankly and honestly, we are in agreement with Hertha BSC and would like to go to Berlin,’ Xhaka’s agent José Noguera said. ‘We have told Arsenal’s club boss Raul Sanllehi and sporting director Edu Gaspar, as well as the new coach Mikel. Granit is a captain of the national team and also helped them to get the Euro 2020 ticket.

‘Arsenal was informed about all the steps, the player and Hertha are clear. ‘It’s only about the transfer fee of the clubs.’ Hertha have offered €25m to Arsenal for the Swiss midfielder. The London club spent nearly £30m to sign Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.
