Chelsea continue chase for 24-year-old explosive forward

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal could go head-to-head with Chelsea in the hunt to sign Said Benrahma from Brentford this summer.

The Algeria star was in top form for the Bees in the EFL Championship last term and he scored 17 goals and grabbed 10 assists from 46 appearances.

In spite of this, the club failed to secure promotion to the English top-flight as they were beaten by Fulham in the play-off final in July.

According to 90min, the forward is expected to leave the Bees this summer and he could be available for a sum in the region of £25m.

A number of Premier League clubs including Chelsea have been linked with his services and it is now revealed that Arsenal have entered the race.

Mikel Arteta has already strengthened the attack with the free transfer of Willian, but he is still understood to be eyeing another creative option.

Benrahma largely featured on the left wing for his side last season, but he is also capable of playing in the opposite side.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are allegedly set to return with a higher bid for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after seeing an opening offer of €16 million (£14.2m) rejected by the French outfit.

The Chelsea boss has supposedly lost faith in current No1 Kepa Arrizabalaga following a number of error-strewn displays last season, and Lampard is believed to have pinpointed Mendy as an ideal cut-price alternative to Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak.

However, The Guardian states that Rennes will not be bullied into a sale and the Blues are preparing a second bid of €20 million (£17.8m) for the Senegal international.
