Chelsea enter the battle to sign 26-year-old Premier League defender
The London giants are reportedly eyeing a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne in case their offer to sign Ben Chilwell ends in failure. Chelsea have already completed deals for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech and Leipzig centre-forward Timo Werner this summer and the club have now turned their attentions to landing a quality defender.
Chelsea manager has identified England international Ben as his number one target in this position but Blues have been forced to explore alternative options, with Foxes holding firm in their £75m valuation of the defender.
Ben is also on Man City’s radar due to Benjamin Mendy’s persistent injury problems since his arrival at the Etihad back in 2017. To add to Man City’s frustrations with Mendy, the Spanish manager is yet to be convinced that Oleksandr Zinchenko could be his long-term solution on the left side of his back-line.
Blues and Man City are now plotting moves for Everton’s Lucas as a cheaper alternative to the England and Leicester left-back. However, it’s claimed Toffees will be demanding a ‘high fee’ for Digne who completed an £18m switch from the Blaugrana to Merseyside back in 2018.
Lucas is a popular figure among Everton faithful and has given a good account of himself in the PL across his two years with Everton. Neither club have given up hope of signing Ben just yet but it’s clear they have a fight on their hands in prising the Englishman away from Leicester City.
Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers is remaining ‘relaxed’ about the situation and insists Ben is coping well with the constant speculation surrounding his future. ‘He’s come back, he looks fantastic,’ Brendan Rodgers recently said.
