Chelsea in pole position to sign 18-year-old Dutch centre-back
The London giants are in the driving seat to sign Xavier Mbuyamba from Barcelona, according to the centre-back’s agent. U19 Netherlands international joined Blaugrana’s youth set up from Dutch club MVV Maastricht last year and has impressed during his time at the Catalan giants.
But Xavier is already looking to leave La Liga giants, and the defender is not short of offers. Blues, however, are in pole position after giving Mbuyamba a presentation which showed him a clear pathway to Frank Lampard’s first-team squad within two campaigns. ‘Almost all major clubs in Europe have asked about Xavier.’
Real Madrid is also there, they are serious about their education, but that would, of course, be a sensitive switch,’ the 18-year-old centre-back’s agent Carlos Barros said. ‘Juventus and Inter Milan are interested, as are top clubs from Germany and England.
‘Chelsea have the best credentials. Of course, we discussed this extensively last year. They gave a great presentation. There is a unique football atmosphere there. During lunch, you are immediate with the first-team footballers, and the club has outlined a very ambitious plan for Xavier.’
‘They think that in one to two years, he can be a starter in the first team. Frank Lampard has, of course, already proven that he is not afraid to start young players. Being in the starting line-up at Chelsea at the age of twenty would, of course, be great.’
Carlos also admitted that the lack of clarity from Blaugrana has pushed the Dutch centre-back towards the exit door. ‘A new presidential election is coming, and it could be that many new people will join the board.’
