Chelsea in pole position to sign 21-year-old South American starlet
Bruno Guimaraes scored in front of a Blues scout in action for Athletico Paranaense in the Copa do Brasil yesterday night. The 21-year-old midfielder is a rising star in South America, and his release clause currently stands at £36m. Blues had eyes in the Athletico box when Athletico took on Internacional.
Bruno was the difference in the first leg of the final, producing a confident finish in the 58th minute after a slick one-two. London club have scouted Guimaraes five times ahead of a move for the promising midfielder. ‘The interest of other clubs, I see that it’s normal when the person has been playing well,’ Bruno said after the match.
‘I leave that in the hands of my agents. I’m happy at Athletico and focused on the final.’ Blues will face contest from Shakhtar, Lille and Italian duo Inter Milan and Napoli for Brazilian starlet’ signature, but London club are currently unable to put forward any proposal to sign the midfielder.
A transfer ban is still in place, and although Blues are hopeful it may be reduced, the English manager cannot make any new signings until next summer. Frank Lampard gave a chance to academy products, and Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount started this campaign fantastically.
Chelsea had an impressive season as they won the Europa League and finished the Premier League in a third place. Blues signed Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic and Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic. London club are unable to buy new footballers until next summer due to a transfer ban.
