Chelsea in pole position to sign 23-year-old Premier League defender
Blues have reportedly been told by Leicester City to pay a world-record transfer fee for a left-back if they want to add Ben Chilwell this summer. England international has shone in the PL in recent times, showing himself to be one of the finest young defenders in Europe and like someone who could be a fine fit at London club.
Ben will not come cheap, with Foxes wanting more than the £80m they ended up pocketing for Harry Maguire last summer. It stays to be seen if Chelsea will be convinced the 23-year-old defender is worth that kind of investment, with the club perhaps needing to slow down a little after a busy start to the summer.
Chelsea boss has already added big names in Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to his squad, but could now do with focusing his efforts on bolstering in back-line. Ben would surely be a major upgrade on the likes of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, but £80m seems a lot to pay, even for a footballer of his calibre.
Defenders are an increasingly important part of the modern football, however, with Reds duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson proving crucial attacking outlets in Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning side. If Blues are to close the gap, spending big on the Englishman could be an important part of their rebuilding process.
