€20m-rated Chelsea injured left-back will miss the match with Wolves
London club could be without in-form defender Emerson Palmieri for weekend’s match with Wolves after he limped off during Azzurri’s 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday. Italy international lasted only eight minutes of Azzurri’s European Championship qualifier in Tampere before being taken off as a precaution after tweaking his hamstring.
Although Blues are confident that Palmieri avoided sustaining any severe damage, it is unlikely that he will be risked for this weekend’s game to Molineux. News of Emerson’s injury will have been a blow to English manager as he has been one of London club’s most impressive performers at the start of the campaign.
While Blues have the second-worst defensive record in the PL, most of their issues have come at back-line or from the out-of-sorts Cesar Azpilicueta on the right. The 25-year-old left-back has been great, winning all 15 of his attempted tackles, topping Blues charts for interceptions and also creating six chances at the other end.
The excellent form has seen him emerge as Italy’s first-choice defender and their coach Roberto Mancini delivered an update on his injury after the narrow victory over Finland at the weekend. Italian boss said: ‘It was nothing serious, he stopped to ensure it didn’t get any worse.’
Should Italian defender miss Blues match with Wolves, it would open the door for Marcos Alonso to play his first match of the season. Marcos has scored an excellent 15 Premier League goals since the start of the 2016-17 campaign, but his form dipped in the second half of last campaign, and he lost his place to Palmieri.
