€20m-rated Liverpool defender dropped from Super Cup final squad

Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren is reportedly out of the Reds Super Cup clash with Chelsea due to ‘illness’ as he nears a transfer to Roma. The 30-year-old defender is edging closer to leaving the Merseyside club for a move to Serie A, while the author has tweeted about the footballer missing tomorrow night’s match.

See below as David Lynch hints Dejan’s absence is not ‘illness’ as he says in inverted commas, with Lovren looking ready to move to the Stadio Olimpico in a £15m deal. Liverpool fans may have some cause for concern at this news, with Jurgen Klopp’s squad lacking depth at the back once Croatia international goes.

The Reds will have to rely on Virgil van Dijk staying fit after playing a lot of matches at a high level for some time now, while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez don’t have the best injury records. Still, £15m for a fourth choice defender isn’t too bad, and Liverpool may well feel midfielder Fabinho can also drop back into defence if necessary.

Croatian defender joined the Merseyside club from Southampton in 2014 with a €62m deal. He was an unchanged figure for the club and helped them to win the Champions League. He has contracted with the English club until 2021, and his release clause is around €20m.

Roma had an excellent consequence in Serie A as they finished the competition in a sixth position. Giallorossi signed Amadou Diawara from Napoli, Gianluca Mancini from Atalanta, Pau Lopez from Real Betis, Leonardo Spinazzola from Juventus and Jordan Veretout from Fiorentina during this summer.
