Ex-PL striker believes Serie A centre-half ‘would be excellent signing’ for Liverpool

Liverpool should do all in their power to bring in Kalidou Koulibaly this summer, with the centre-back an ‘upgrade’ on Joe Gomez.

That’s according to former Manchester United attacker Dimitar Berbatov. He reckons the powerful Napoli centre-half is one of the few players in the world game who can improve Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning roster.

Gomez is probably regarded as Virgil’s best central defensive partner. But with Dejan Lovren having signed for Zenit St Petersburg in a £10.9m switch, there remains room for the Reds to bring in a new central defender.

Liverpool have since been mentioned with plenty of names, with Ozan Kabak strongly linked. Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly and Real Betis’s Aissa Mandi have also been touted as targets.

However, Berbatov reckons the Reds should spend big and meet the price needed to prise Kalidou from Napoli.

“I’m not sure they need to change too much, maybe a centre-back better than Joe Gomez to play with Van Dijk,” Dimitar told Betfair.

“Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli would be an excellent signing. But apart from that the Reds have an excellent team.”

Meantime, teenage shot-stopper Jakub Ojrzynski has signed his first professional deal at Liverpool after impressing in the youth set-up in his first year with the reds.

The 17-year-old ace was in demand last summer, but the Reds beat Manchester United to his signature, bringing him to England from Legia Warsaw.

The Polish ace, known as Kuka in the Liverpool Academy, has featured regularly for the U18 side and appeared for the U19 team in the UEFA Youth League this season.

Jakub has done enough to secure his first professional contract with the club and his deal runs until the summer of 2023 at Anfield.
