Highly-rated Ligue 1 keeper linked with surprise move to Arsenal
Dijon stopper Runar Alex Runarsson has reportedly emerged as a surprise transfer target for Premier League giants, Arsenal.
With Emiliano Martinez on the verge of departing from the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta is in the market for a replacement.
Throughout last week, the Premier League giants were rumoured with an approach for David Raya, who may be allowed to depart from Brentford for the right price.
However, the Daily Mail reports that the Gunners have made contact with Dijon regarding the availability of Iceland international Runarsson.
The 25-year-old, who has played 36 games in Ligue 1 since 2018, was an unused substitute for his nation’s recent fixtures against England and Belgium.
Runarsson has less than two years left on his current deal, a factor which could leave the Gunners regarding him as a cheaper alternative to Raya.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have reportedly accepted a £16m bid from Aston Villa for their second choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The 28-year-old is believed to have turned down the offer of a new deal at the North London club after failing to receive the first-team assurances he wanted from their head-coach, Mikel Arteta.
Martinez was left out of the Gunners team for their Premier League game opener against Fulham today, with German stopper Bernd Leno keeping a clean sheet in their 3-0 victory.
The North London club were believed to be holding out for £20m for the South American stopper, who impressed as a stand-in for the injured Leno at the end of last campaign, however, Sky Sports News claims that they have now accepted an initial £16m bid from Premier League outfits, Aston Villa.
