Italian club given green light to sign €25m-rated Man United defender

Red Devils reportedly look ready to receive an improved transfer offer for in-form centre-back Chris Smalling as he impresses out on loan at Roma. Giallorossi could do well to keep England international beyond his loan spell, and it looks they are now working to secure his signature on a permanent deal.

Serie A giants chiefs have discussed lodging a new and improved bid in the next few days for Chris, who struggled towards the end of his time at Old Trafford. Still, one wonders if Man United should now consider keeping hold of Smalling, who is surely a superior option to the likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo or Eric Bailly.

That said, after having so long to prove himself at Theatre of Dreams, it makes sense that his chance at Man United may now have gone. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, however, as he’s far from the only talented footballer to recently struggle in this United set-up.

The 30-year-old defender has revived his career at the Italian club, just as Romelu Lukaku has at Inter Milan this campaign, and the likes of Memphis Depay and Angel Di Maria have done with Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively.

It is sure to be frustrating for the Red Devils supporters, however, to see them repeatedly fail to get the best out of footballers who then go on to shine elsewhere. Roma signed several footballers during the summer transfer window like Gianluca Mancini from Atalanta, Jordan Veretout from Fiorentina and Leonardo Spinazzola from Juventus.
