Liverpool determined to sign €60m-rated Serie A centre-back
The Merseyside giants are uninterested in signing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly due to his £90m price tag, according to reports. Senegal international has established himself as one of Europe’s top defenders, attracting interest from the likes of Man United, Man City and PSG.
Naples president Aurelio De Laurentiis previously admitted that offers of less than £60m for Kalidou would be immediately dismissed. And reports emerged earlier this week that Liverpool were attempting to drive down the price by offering their fourth-choice defender Dejan Lovren as part of the deal.
However, spending more than £60m on a footballer nearing the age of 30 is against the club’s transfer policy. The Merseyside giants could still be willing to let Croatian centre-back Lovren leave this summer if they can find a suitable replacement.
Reds legend John Barnes believes that while Koulibaly would be perfect signing, his former side have no need to be splashing out on a marquee signing.
‘Kalidou is a very good player and you’re looking at Joe Gomez coming through and he could help him, Koulibaly is already the finished article so if they get him that would be a good signing for them,’ Barnes said. ‘If they don’t get him, well they’re still 25 points better than any other team, so as long as they don’t lose players.’
‘I don’t think there’s necessarily a reason to go out and make big-name signings. Yes, they’ve signed Minamino and they may be able to sign some players that aren’t going to go straight into the first team, but I don’t think they necessarily need that.’
