Liverpool held negotiations with 20-year-old Bundesliga attacker
Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz could hand the Merseyside giants a transfer blow by committing himself to the Bundesliga club until 2022. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been an admirer of Germany international for some time with the playmaker widely regarded as a future star.
A move for Kai had perhaps seemed unlikely with Bundesliga giants valuing him at £92m. Havertz doesn’t want to join Bayern Munich so that at least is a positive update for the Reds. The 20-year-old playmaker has scored ten times in 34 games this campaign featuring mainly as a No.10 for the German club.
If the silky attacker does pen a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen, it is thought that it will include a release clause, similar to that of Timo Werner who is also a target for the Reds. He has eight assists to his name and his last action before play was suspended across the globe was to score in a 3-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League.
Boss the German boss will have several targets in mind for the summer transfer window as he sets about maintaining high standards. The German attacker’s arrival might be unlikely this summer, but with a release clause in his extension, it might make landing him easier in the future.
As a result, Jurgen Klopp might have to move on this summer and strengthen other areas of his squad. The midfield ranks at Liverpool are well stocked. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum all currently battle it out for the three places.
