Liverpool in pole position to sign 18-year-old promising centre-back

Reds are reportedly interested in signing Schalke centre-back Malick Thiaw. Malick has done pretty well for the Bundesliga side’s youth team this campaign, netting nine goals and providing an assist in 23 games across all tournaments this campaign so far. Joel Matip also came through Schalke’s academy, joining Liverpool in 2016.

Thiaw made his first-team debut for Schalke a couple of weeks back when he came on as a substitute with Hoffenheim in an eventual 1-1 draw. Thiaw was also an unused substitute in their DFB Pokal game with Bayern Munich. Liverpool are eyeing a summer move for Malick who has a release clause of £7m.

The report also claims that Schalke are in negotiations with the youngster over a new deal which would have a higher release clause. Malick’s performances for the Bundesliga side’s youth team have been pretty well, and there’s a fair chance of him featuring more often for the senior team in the forthcoming campaigns.

Provided Liverpool manage to sign Malick, he will most likely end up on the bench or in the youth team. Hence, it would be a perfect option for Thiaw to stay at Bundesliga giants. Thiaw’s deal runs out in 2021 and Schalke are scrambling to secure his long term, so the Reds will have to move fast.

After previously featuring for Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach’s youth setups, Malick has been progressing through Schalke’s academy since 2015. The teen who can choose between Senegal, Finland and Germany for his international career, draws comparisons to Joel Matip for his strength and poise.
