Liverpool in pole position to sign 19-year-old promising striker
It looks strange to think of a team essentially putting a deposit down on a footballer, but it sounds like that’s the case here. Sao Paulo youngster Gustavo Maia had been attracting the interest of Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, but now it sounds like Barcelona have made their move to secure him.
The report says Blaugrana have made a payment of €1m to ensure they have some kind of the first option on Maia, and they now have until June 30 to pay another €3.5m to secure his signing. They also suggest that the original payment will be lost if they don’t take up that option, so you have to think they will bring Gustavo this Summer.
He’s described as a striker who can use both feet and scores goals, but it does sound like more of a developmental signing than someone for the first team. It stays to be seen if the Catalan club will sign him, but it’s worth following his story to see what happens next.
Blaugrana have reached a deal with Sao Paulo whereby they have the first option to sign the Brazilian striker, but it turns out that they had competition from Los Rojiblancos and Merseyside club in the race for his signature. At that point, the Catalan club would have to pay other 3.5m euros.
Gustavo is one of the Brazilian club’s up-and-coming players and has not even made his first-team debut, yet his displays at youth level have attracted a lot of interest in his services. If they refuse to sign Maia, however, they would be unable to recoup the initial one million euros they gave to the Brazilian club.
