Liverpool interested in signing 20-year-old Bundesliga defender

The Merseyside giants have opened negotiations with Schalke to sign Turkish defender Ozan Kabak, according to reports in Germany. Liverpool are expected to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer as Dejan Lovren joined Zenit.

Jurgen Klopp has already identified Lovren’s replacement as Liverpool have made a move to sign Turkey international from Schalke. The report claims that the Merseyside giants and the Bundesliga club are now in talks over a possible deal this summer.

But Schalke are demanding €35m for Ozan, who was signed from Stuttgart in a €15m deal last summer. Kabak has previously been linked with both Man United and Man City. The 20-year-old defender was available for only £12m last summer after a clause in his contract allowed him to leave then-relegated Stuttgart.

Liverpool won the Premier League and the German manager wants to bolster the squad. The Turkish centre-back also has a release clause in his contract with Schalke which would allow him to leave the club next summer for €45m. Ozan, who won his first senior cap for Turkey in November, is also a huge admirer of Virgil van Dijk.

‘My personal aim is to become a top defender in maybe two or three years, like Virgil van Dijk. He’s my idol, I really like him,’ Kabak earlier this campaign. I like his style and how he plays, so I can say he’s my football idol.’ Liverpool signed Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg during the winter transfer window.
