Liverpool keep a close eye on 28-year-old Senegalese defender
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has contacted Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly in a bid to convince the defender to move to Liverpool. The German boss has paired Joe Gomez with Virgil van Dijk this term, but Liverpool are only one goal shy of conceding the 22 that they conceded throughout the entire 18/19 season with nine games remaining.
Though Liverpool are going to be crowned champions, Jurgen believes an experienced defender next to Van Dijk is an area in which his side could progress next campaign, and Kalidou is a long-term target. Koulibaly has made no secret of his desire to move to the Premier League and has long been linked with Man United.
However, Red Devils opted for Harry Maguire in an £80m deal last summer, leaving Reds a relatively free run at the 28-year-old centre-back. The Senegalese centre-back is said to have been flattered by Jurgen Klopp’s decision to call him and is open to a move to Liverpool.
With club finances in dire shape due to the covid19 pandemic, it is set to be a buyers’ market this summer and Reds are one of the few clubs that could be relatively shielded from the financial pain due to their success in recent years.
That’s led to the German boss calling Senegal international to discuss a move to Anfield and Klopp laid out his plans to the centre-back in a bid to convince him to join the club. It’s claimed Klopp spoke to Kalidou about his plans of pairing him with Van Dijk and what his plans are for the rest of the Reds side in the next 12 to 18 months.
