Liverpool keep a close eye on €40m-rated La Liga centre-forward
The January transfer window will open in less than two months, and already, Merseyside club are linked with many footballers. The latest player in the limelight is that of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, but this is not the first time that Uruguay international is linked with Liverpool.
Back in May, Maxi responded to rumours linking him with the Reds and Barcelona and claimed that he is calm. In July, he ended up leaving Celta Vigo to join Valencia. Now, Merseyside club are following Gomez with great interest, but they face competition from arch-rivals Man United, who are also interested in luring him.
The 23-year-old striker’s current deal with the La Liga giants will expire in 2024, and it has a huge release clause of £121m. Last campaign, Uruguayan centre-forward featured in 35 league matches for Celta Vigo and directly contributed in 18 goals (13 goals and five assists).
In the current season, so far, Maxi has started seven games for Valencia in the Spanish league and scored five goals. Gomez is yet to open his account in the UEFA Champions League, but on Tuesday night, he did provide an assist with French club Lille in a contest that Valencia won 4-1 at the Mestalla.
He made his senior international debut back in 2017 and so far, he has netted two goals in 16 games for the two-time World Cup winners. Liverpool mainly uses Roberto Firmino in the No.9 position, but the Brazilian striker is not an out, and out striker, instead, he plays mostly in the False No. 9 role and helps our midfielders and wingers.
