Man United held negotiations with 20-year-old German attacker

The Red Devils have discussed the possibility of signing Kai Havertz as an alternative to James Maddison and Jack Grealish and reached out to Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Norwegian manager is keen to reinforce his midfield and Man United have started talks to sign Sporting playmaker Bruno Fernandes, with the Red Devils coach having personally scouted him in action with Porto last week.

However, Bruno is not the only playmaker on Man United’s radar, and the Red Devils are also keeping a very close eye on Germany international, as well as Maddison and Jack. Man United had brief negotiations with Leverkusen this month to see if the German club would sell but were quoted an enormous figure of €100m.

After a sensational breakout season last campaign, Kai has struggled to maintain those levels this campaign, and there had been a feeling that Bayer’s asking price might have dipped. After scoring an astonishing 17 times in the Bundesliga last campaign, Havertz has netted just twice in the 2019/20 season and assisted only once.

The 20-year-old playmaker was also jeered by supporters when he was subbed off with Hertha in December, though he stays extremely highly rated and has many admirers at major European clubs.

Bundesliga giants are reluctant to sell in winter while Red Devils have baulked at their asking price, but they will continue to monitor his performances over the rest of the campaign and consider making another approach in the summer.

Even at £85m, the German playmaker would be less expensive than Maddison, with Leicester ready to demand an astronomical transfer fee that would eclipse what they received from Man United for Harry Maguire.
