Man United in pole position to sign €45m-rated Ligue 1 centre-forward
Red Devils will have the first refusal on Memphis Depay if the attacker leaves Lyon in the winter transfer window. The Netherlands international has repeatedly been linked with a come back to the Premier League, with Tottenham the latest side to be linked with a move for the striker.
Memphis has already scored eleven times this campaign and could be hot property when the winter window opens. However, Les Gones director of football Juninho explained any team wishing to buy Depay would have to hope Red Devils passed on their right to re-sign him.
‘Man United has the priority if several teams line up to buy him,’ Juninho said. ‘But we have not received any bids so far. He is delighted right now in Lyon. ‘Rudi Garcia will soon make his decision. He is a technical leader. We will discuss an extension of a contract by the end of the year.’
The 25-year-old centre-forward signed for Man United in 2015 in a £31m deal from PSV Eindhoven. At the time, the Dutch attacker was one of the brightest talents in Eredivisie, but he struggled to live up to that billing at Theatre of Dreams and was eventually sold in 2017.
Memphis was asked about the transfer rumours linking him with Spurs this week but refused to be drawn into the speculation. ‘I don’t want to talk about that. I don’t want to talk about rumours that I know nothing about,’ he said. ‘We leave it in the corridors. I am focused on a strong season so far.’
