Man United in the hunt for 21-year-old Serie A defensive rock

Red Devils are set to send scouts to watch Juventus centre-back Merih Demiral on Thursday amid reports linking him with a move to Man United. Premier League giants, as well as Arsenal and AC Milan, are interested in Turkey international, with Bianconeri after at least €30m for his signature.

Amid this, it looks like the Red Devils truly are in the battle for Merih, with the club sending scouts to watch him in action against Iceland later this week. Demiral only moved to Old Lady this summer just gone, however, despite this, it looks like the defender’s time in Turin could already be coming to an end.

The 21-year-old centre-back has played just one game for the Serie A champions so far this year, with the defender being kept out of the Bianconeri’s starting line-up by the likes of Matthijs De Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci. Maurizio Sarri prefers to give a chance to experienced centre-backs like Bonucci and Chiellini.

Man United could do with some more options to choose from at centre-back given Eric Bailly’s inability to remain clear with injuries combined with Phil Jones’ debatable lack of quality. Demiral is a regular member of the national team line-up which is already a big achievement for the defender.

Thus, their reported pursuit of Turkish centre-back makes sense, and given that Jones states the defender could end up leaving Juventus in winter, it looks like Man United could sign him during the January market to help boost their top-four hopes. Norwegian manager wants to bolster the back-line during the transfer window.
