Man United keeping tabs with €20m-rated Ligue 1 centre-forward
Red Devils coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reignited the club’s move for Monaco striker Pietro Pellegri, two years after Jose Mourinho tried to add him at Theatre of Dreams. Italy international was a target for the club in 2018 following his rise to prominence at Genoa, and Man United held extensive negotiations with his agent over a move.
However, Pietro felt a switch to Monaco would aid his development and he joined the Ligue 1 club for a fee of nearly £21m, making him the second most expensive 16-year-old of all time. Pellegri is yet to become a regular at Monaco, but the club retains high hopes for his future, which is a sentiment that Red Devils share.
Man United hope to exploit the 19-year-old striker’s lack of first-team opportunities by testing Monaco’s resolve to keep him this summer. Red Devils have been following the Italian starlet since the age of 16, and he would fit the profile of additions that Solskjaer has made since his appointment at Theatre of Dreams.
Man United are targeting Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga this summer. The quartet all fit into the profile of footballers that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants at the club, and Pietro could prove a more viable long-term option than Odion Ighalo.
The Nigerian’s loan spell at the club expires later this week, but the Red Devils stay in contact with his parent club Shanghai Shenhua over an extension. While Man United stay confident of prolonging his stay, it now looks unlikely that Man United will sign him permanently, meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will seek a back-up forward this summer.
