Man United missed chance to sign €40m-rated South American attacker
Douglas Costa’s agent has claimed that the Red Devils had a ‘strong interest’ in the attacker this transfer window, but Maurizio Sarri had no intention of letting him leave the Old Lady.
Injury problems meant Brazil international only managed seven league starts for the Bianconeri last campaign and Costa was heavily linked with a move away from Juventus ahead of the 2019/20 season.
However, Italian manager who took over the reins from Massimiliano Allegri in mid-June views Douglas as a key part of his project at Allianz Stadium and stood firm while the 28-year-old winger’s future was in serious doubt.
Brazilian forward has since started Juve’ two opening games of the campaign with Parma and Napoli, providing two assists against the latter at the Allianz Stadium. Branchini insists Douglas is determined to take his game to the next level after a frustrating campaign under Max Allegri the last term.
‘Costa has had countless health problems,’ he said. ‘Last campaign he was very often injured. He is wanting to recover with great professionalism after standing still. ‘Bianconeri never intended to sell him amid the big pressure from Man United.’
Branchini refused to rule out Brazilian star joining a Premier League club in the future amid Red Devils failed pursuit this transfer window. ‘Douglas is a “cool” professional in the best sense of the word. He can adapt to everything,’ he added.
‘Think of how well he did in Ukraine, in a country different from Brazil. He loves Old Lady but can adapt to every reality.
