Mikel Arteta provides injury update on two players
The London giants manager Mikel Arteta admits Pablo Mari’s injury does not ‘look very good’ after the defender was forced off in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Man City. Arsenal made a bright start at the Etihad, but their task was made all the tougher as Granit Xhaka was stretchered off with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Matters were made worse after only twenty minutes when Mari pulled up after chasing the galloping Kyle Walker down Gunners left flank. Mikel was forced to use two of his allocated substitution slots in replacing the pair and the London club’s miserable night was made even worse as David Luiz was sent off before the half-time.
With David missing through suspension for the next two matches and fixtures coming thick and fast, Spaniard will be desperate to get Granit and Pablo back. However, though Mikel Arteta was unsure about when Granit will return, he indicated Pablo may be sent for a spell on the sidelines.
‘They are getting assessed at the moment,’ said the Spanish boss. ‘We will know probably something more tomorrow morning, but Pablo’s one it did not look perfect, to be honest’. Mikel Arteta’s post-match press conference was dominated by questions about Luiz following his display and sending off.
The centre-back is out of a deal at the end of the campaign, and it remains to be seen whether the London giants will extend his contract, either by a year or by a month or so. Mikel Arteta though was keen to defend the centre-back.
