Roma are close to signing £100,000-a-week Liverpool centre-back

Dejan Lovren is on the verge of a Liverpool exit after negotiations were opened with Roma. Jurgen Klopp is willing to cash in on the defender this transfer window, with a bid of £15m expected to be enough to land the 30-year-old star.

Milan were thought to be the frontrunners at the beginning of the summer, but Giallorossi are now confident of completing a move. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with the two sides haggling over a fee.

Dejan was left on the bench in Reds Champions League final win against Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last campaign, and he recognises he is the fourth choice behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

As a result, Lovren is keen to leave the Merseyside club in pursuit of first-team football, and Serie A giants are eager to bring him to Italy. Should Croatia international leave, Liverpool may be left somewhat short of defensive options.

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho would likely be considered to be the fourth-choice centre-back, with Joe Gomez also expected to provide back-up to Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. With James Milner providing cover to Andy Robertson at left-back, a string of defensive injuries could leave the squad stretched thin.

Roma had terrible result in Serie A as they finished the tournament in a sixth position. Italian club lost the second playoff match against Porto 3-1 and knocked out from the competition. Giallorossi already signed Pau Lopez from Real Betis, Amadou Diawara from Napoli, Jordan Veretout from Fiorentina and Gianluca Mancini from Atalanta.
