Roma started negotiations with €20m-rated Man United centre-back
Red Devils centre-back Marcos Rojo is reportedly of interest to Roma this summer with his loan deal at Estudiantes ready to come to an end. Argentina international has gradually seen his role at Man United reduced as after playing 41 games in the 2016/17 season, he managed only 18 in the two campaigns that followed combined.
Injuries played their part, but so did a contest for places with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof establishing themselves in the heart of the defence, while Luke Shaw has made the left-back position his own again as teenager Brandon Williams has made a breakthrough this campaign too.
In turn, it was unsurprising to see Marcos shipped out on loan in winter until the end of the campaign and now reports in Italy suggest that he could be set for another exit in the summer. Smalling has been fantastic for the Giallorossi this campaign, establishing himself as a crucial figure in the club and he has rediscovered his best form.
Rojo could become an option for Roma to bolster their back-line next campaign, although it’s added that it may only be likely in the event Chris Smalling isn’t signed permanently from Man United. The Argentine defender is a regular member of the national team squad and also helped them to reach the 2014 World Cup final.
With that in mind, it would seem likely that the Giallorossi would try to add him outright when his loan agreement expires, but much will depend on whether or not Man United are willing to sell and if the two clubs can reach a deal as well as Chris Smalling’s desire.
