Tottenham started talks with €20m-rated Chelsea centre-forward
Jose Mourinho is planning to entice Olivier Giroud to Spurs after the imminent addition of Timo Werner dealt his Blues prospects another blow. Blues agreed on a deal to sign Germany and RB Leipzig centre-forward Werner last week, with Germany international set to sign a long-term agreement at London club worth £200,000-a-week.
France international signed a new one-year deal with Blues last month but seemed ready to be pushed even further down the pecking order by Timo’s arrival, having played back-up to Tammy Abraham for much of the campaign.
The Portuguese tactician, who has had two spells at Stamford Bridge as a coach, is a known admirer of Olivier and stays interested in signing the centre-forward this summer.
Tottenham were strongly linked with a move for Giroud during the winter transfer window and face contest from Inter Milan and Lazio to secure his signature, while Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and West Ham United are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.
The 33-year-old centre-forward, who has scored 21 goals in 76 games for Chelsea since joining from the Gunners in 2017, is settled in London but knows he may have to leave if his game-time is under threat.
After signing a deal extension at Chelsea, Olivier said he was determined to show the English boss he can ‘count on me’ and help Blues win more titles. With Timo ready to strengthen Blues attacking options, the club will look to offload fellow striker Michy Batshuayi this summer and have set their asking price for the Belgian centre-forward.
